Purchasing Initiatives

Local Farms and businesses supply a variety of locally grown and fair trade products throughout the year which we proudly incorporate into our dining and catering menus.

In the Community

Recycling

Chartwells is making a difference on campus by recycling bottles and paper products as well as our initiative to recycle our cooking oil and having it picked up by Rothsay and converted into Biodiesel which is a non-toxic biodegradeable fuel producing 60 - 100% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than petroluem.

We are currently composting our food waste generated in our Cafeterias and have that picked up by a local Environmental company and also converted into a reuseable product.

Conestoga College and Chartwells have joined forces and is seeking approval to form a GREEN Advisory Committee (Greater Recycling Environmental Education Network) that will discuss and implement new intiatives.

Lug-OUR-Mug, Lug-YOUR-OWN-Mug and Refilable Beverage Bottle Promotions are implemented as a way of reducing the amount of disposable cups and plasic bottles generated from our Cafeterias offering a significant discount on coffee and fountain pop purchases with a reuseable containers.  When you buy your beverage, make sure to ask for your Frequency Loyalty Card.  Purchase 9 refills, get the 10th FREE.

We have implemented a recycled paper plate and have eliminated foam plates in the Cafeteria.  Foam Take-Out containers will soon be eliminated also.

We are trying to move away from individual packaged condiments to bulk products to reduce packaging waste.

We have implemented wooden stir sticks to replace plastic. Our Utensils are a compostable corn by-product, not plastic.

We are also offering Fair Trade certified Organic Coffee.
